Approved the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan to build a safer and more resilient country against its impacts

25-09-2020

The National Climate Change Adaptation Plan (PNACC) 2021-2030, approved by the Ministers Cabinet of the Spanish Government on the 22nd September 2020, constitutes a basic planning instrument and intends to improve our anticipation capacity as well as to identify the best approach for the different sectors with the objective of building a solid economy and inclusive society. Adaptation policies offer new opportunities reducing climate change-associated uncertainty. They also generate additional positive effects on biodiversity conservation, health protection or climate change mitigation. The approved document not only responds to the adaptation necessity against important climate change-derived risks that Spain faces, but also is aligned with the new policies laid out by the Council of Europe that links adaptation to the pandemic recovery policies.

The PNACC defines objectives, criteria, scope and actions to build resilience, foresee and minimize damages, and set orientations for the different sectors and the society. In particular, it defines and describes 81 lines of action to be developed in the different socio-economic sectors of the country, organised in 18 working areas, among which human health, water and hydric resources, natural heritage, biodiversity and protected areas, coast and marine environment, forest protection, fight against desertification, agriculture and livestock or food safety are remarked. In addition to sectorial approaches, the plan also proposes 7 key working lines, crosscutting to all the sectors.
